January 20, 2017

You’ve picked out the perfect outfit for the evening. You have a small gift for your sweetheart. You take one last look in the mirror, smile, and — wait. That’s not what you wanted to see.

Your teeth are stained, maybe a little yellow. Is that because of the large coffee each morning, the tea or soft drinks to get you through afternoons at work? It could be any number of things.

The good news is you probably still have time to give yourself a bright, white “high definition” smile with professional teeth whitening at our dentist office. If you live in or near Chicago, you can make an appointment at Northalsted Dental Spa for an in-office whitening treatment.

Whether you are getting ready for Valentine’s Day or another special occasion, this is the fastest way to clean your stained teeth.

Make an appointment as soon as possible by calling 773-245-2779 or contacting us online.

Whiter Teeth Make Nicer Smiles

Teeth whitening is as popular as it’s ever been, and it remains one of the most requested services in cosmetic dentistry.

The reasons are pretty simple. Teeth whitening is one of the fastest ways to improve your smile. Removing deep stains make your teeth look brighter and whiter. That little change can make a big difference.

Surveys have shown that people with nice smiles are considered more successful, friendlier, and more attractive.

A few years ago USA Today surveyed single adults around the country. They found that 58 percent of men and 71 percent of women said good teeth were a “must have” in a potential long-term partner. This was the highest rated item among both groups.

If you’re ready to whiten your smile, call 773-245-2779 to make an appointment at our dentist office in Chicago.

Teeth Whitening Could Make You Appear Younger, Too

Want to look younger than you do today? Teeth whitening could help with that, too.

The Daily Mail, a British newspaper, demonstrated this. With the help of a photo editing software, they showed people photographs of celebrities with different shades of teeth.

As one example, people who saw photos of actress Helena Bonham Carter with a whiter smile estimated that she was seven years younger than people who saw the photos with her natural teeth color.

The Mail found that people’s perceived ages could vary by as much as 12 years depending on how white or how stained their teeth appeared in the photographs.

There may be a logical explanation for this. It’s normal for our teeth to become yellower and more stained as we get older.

Remember the coffee, tea, and soft drinks we mentioned earlier? Each one you drink adds to the stains on our teeth. So do most of the foods we eat, and if you use tobacco, that makes the staining even worse.

If you would like to see what professional teeth whitening can do, make an appointment at Northalsted Dental Spa soon.

Professional Teeth Whitening Vs. The Stuff At The Store

If you had any doubt that teeth whitening is popular, just pay attention the next time you walk down the toothpaste aisle.

Try to find any toothpaste that doesn’t mention “whitening” on the box. You’ll also find mouth rinses, strips, and gels. But do any of them work?

The American Dental Association Council On Scientific Affairs tried to answer that question as more and more “whitening” products came on the market. Here’s a quick summary of their findings:

▸ Whitening toothpaste can remove surface stains but does not contain bleaching agents to remove deeper stains.

▸ Commercial teeth whitening products contain limited amounts of bleaching agents. They can go deeper than whitening toothpaste, but overuse of commercial whitening products can damage teeth.

▸ Professional teeth whitening can have bleaching agents in concentrations up to 11 times higher than commercial products.

This helps to explain why professional products should be administered under the supervision of dental professionals.

There is one other thing that is important to mention from the ADA council’s findings. They recommended that anyone considering teeth whitening (commercial or professional) should first consult with their dentist.

This is because teeth whitening isn’t always advisable for every patient. In those cases, veneers may be a better option for creating a whiter, brighter smile.
