TMJ Treatment in Chicago
Americans’ hectic, fast-paced lifestyles take a substantial toll on our bodies. More and more, dentists are coming to realize the role that stress plays in dental problems. Maybe you’ve been noticing a new tightness in your jaw when you wake up, or you suffer splitting headaches that can’t be explained.
An increasingly common, yet often overlooked, ailment may be the cause: temporomandibular joint disorders, or TMD. Sufferers of TMD often clench, tighten, and grind their jaws in their sleep or during periods of high stress. As part of our general dentistry services, Northalsted Dental Spa specializes in TMD treatment/ TMJ Treatment for our Chicago patients.
If you are suffering from any of the following symptoms, you may have TMD:
- Aching or sensitivity near your ear
- Tight, tender, or painful jaw
- Tenderness or aching of the face
- Sore, aching, or tight shoulders
- Headaches or migraines
- Limited range of motion of the jaw
- Difficulty chewing or discomfort while chewing
TMD is caused by the muscles near your temporomandibular joint operating incorrectly. This can lead to grinding of your teeth and other painful symptoms, and can have serious long-term effects on your oral health and peace of mind.
As a trained specialist in the diagnosis of TMJ disorders, Dr. Griffin will meet with you at our Chicago office to determine whether your symptoms are due to TMD and how to best treat you. Using X-rays, teeth wear patterns, and other tests, we can determine the most effective way to treat your TMD.
For most patients, TMD symptoms can be resolved by using a night guard: an oral appliance that you wear when sleeping. Because many of the causes of TMD pain are due to grinding and clenching your jaw subconsciously, wearing a night guard gives your muscles a chance to relax and stay in a neutral position for a longer period of time. With only a sleep’s worth of wearing your night guard, you can have a whole day of feeling rested and ready to face the world!
Night guards are easy to wear and can even be worn during the day for patients who still have pain! We’ll make a custom-fit night guard for you by taking an impression of your teeth and sending it to a dental lab. Soon you’ll have your night guard and a return to sleeping soundly!
We can also use Botox to treat continued TMD symptoms. Botox is able to relax muscles, and if you are having continued pain due to clenching and grinding, it can often be an excellent solution! We’ll be sure to explore all of your treatment options and recommend the best fit.
