What are Veneers?

Dental veneers are small, forward-facing caps that are placed on the fronts of teeth. They provide a permanent overlay that hides imperfections, such as discoloration, minor chips, asymmetry, and other dental flaws.

Veneers can be perfectly matched to your natural teeth, so the difference between your untreated teeth will be virtually invisible. When you come to Northalsted Dental Spa, we use our superior shade matching system to ensure your smile restorations look completely natural.

What Do Veneers Treat?

Dental veneers treat a variety of cosmetic dental flaws and even minor functional issues. Some ways veneers can help improve your dental health and the appearance of your teeth include:

  • Repairing chipped or cracked teeth
  • Closing gaps between teeth
  • Lengthening or shortening uneven teeth
  • Brightening discolored teeth
  • Reshaping small or misshapen teeth
  • Adding uniformity to your smile
  • Covering crooked teeth

Veneers allow patients to enjoy improvements to their smile very quickly. While traditional orthodontics are great for straightening teeth, closing gaps, and improving bite alignment, the results can take years.

Dental veneers are typically applied in 2-3 appointments and last anywhere from 5-15 years or longer. If you’ve ever looked in the mirror and felt self-conscious about your smile, veneers could be a great way to restore your confidence and repair your teeth quickly.

Ideal Candidates for Veneers

During your consultation with Dr. Griffin, you’ll learn whether you’re a good candidate for dental veneers. Ideal candidates need to be in good general and oral health. Patients who benefit from veneers often have noticeable smile flaws they want to cover without investing in long-term orthodontic care. Other times, orthodontics simply won’t address a patient’s cosmetic concerns.

Contact us today to schedule a consultation with our team of dental professionals to find out if veneers are right for you.

Different Types of Dental Veneers

There are a few different types of dental veneers, the most common being porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are extremely durable and long lasting. They also look nearly identical to natural teeth, therefore they’re a popular choice amongst patients.

Below is a list of several different types of veneers.

  • Porcelain Veneers
  • Composite Veneers
  • Ceramic Veneers
  • Prepless Veneers
  • Minimal-Prep Veneers
  • Removable Veneers
  • Palatal Veneers (used to restore structural integrity to the backs of teeth, rather than the fronts)

Some veneers are more durable than others, and one variety may be better for treating a specific issue compared to another. For example, porcelain veneers are great for repairing chipped teeth due to their durability. Prepless veneers are great for patients who want to protect their natural tooth enamel, and don’t have excessive tooth discoloration.

Dr. Griffin will recommend the most conservative treatment option available based on your current oral health and cosmetic goals.

The Procedure Process

The application process for dental veneers will vary based on what type of veneers you choose. There is little to no tooth preparation required for minimal and prepless veneers. However, for porcelain and other types of veneers, the application process is more extensive.

At Northalsted Dental Spa, we begin with a consultation. Once we’ve assessed your smile goals and chosen the proper size and color for your veneers, we’ll build a 3-D model of your teeth. This will be used to generate your smile preview, which allows you to see what your new smile will look like after treatment. It’s also easy to make any changes you want prior to your procedure.

At your first procedure appointment, your dentist will start by removing a thin layer of tooth enamel to accommodate the veneers. Then, a digital impression of your teeth will be taken and used to create your permanent veneers.

After your teeth have been fully prepped, temporary veneers will be placed and you’ll leave the office with an already improved smile. The digital impression will be sent to a lab where your permanent veneers will be created.

In about 2-4 weeks, you’ll return to the dental office to receive your permanent veneers. The temporary veneers will be removed and the new, custom-made permanent ones will take their place.

Caring for Your Veneers

Veneers require the same care as your natural teeth. It’s important to brush and floss every day, as well as visit your dentist regularly for check-ups. With proper at-home dental care, your veneers should last anywhere from 5-15 years or more, depending on the variety.

It should be noted that you may experience sensitivity to heat and cold immediately after the procedure, but this should subside within about two weeks. Eating exceptionally hard or crunchy foods is not recommended, as this could cause damage to your veneers. If you grind your teeth in your sleep, you should wear a mouthguard at night to avoid chipping or cracking your veneers and your natural teeth.

How Much Do Veneers Cost?

Dental veneers vary in cost depending on what type you choose, and the number of veneers you are having applied. To learn more about the cost of veneers in Chicago, contact our restorative dentist at Northalsted Dental Spa today.

Should I Get Dental Crowns or Veneers?

Dental crowns are another method used to address various dental flaws. However, unless the structural integrity of a tooth has been compromised, veneers are the more conservative treatment option. This is because preparing your teeth for veneers requires less enamel reduction than crowns.

Veneers are ideal for fixing minor structural flaws and cosmetic concerns, while crowns are designed to repair teeth that have been severely damaged by injury or decay. The team at Northalsted Dental Spa will help you understand which treatment option is best for you.
